This position may be eligible for hybrid remote work in accordance with state policy and the agency’s remote work program but does require weekly onsite work

The position is designated Statutory Exempt and is exempt from the State Human Resources Act.

This position is responsible for planning, engineering, and assisting in designing systems to support state agencies utilizing the DIT Infrastructure and Services. This role is expected to be a technical architect and subject matter expert on all IT infrastructure, including multiple Cloud Platforms and native services (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform), Networking (routing, load balancing, VPN, DNS, DHCP), Cybersecurity (Network Security, Cloud Security Posture Management, and Identity and Access Management), compute resources (Virtual Machines, containers, serverless computing) and storage (databases, cloud storage, backups). It requires thorough knowledge of IT governance, compliance, and service management.

This role also involves system analysis and design creation, ensuring that business problems are fully understood, detailed requirements and business needs are captured, and alternative solutions are investigated and proposed.

One of the key responsibilities is to create architectural models and diagrams of existing agency applications from multiple disciplines (business, systems, information, and technology) and architecting those for a public cloud vendor, ensuring the application takes advantage of the scalability and elasticity of the cloud, meets the highest security standards, and achieves the required performance.

Duties Include, But Are Not Limited, To

  • Writing detailed design documents that outline the structure, components, and configuration of cloud infrastructure, specifically in the areas of networking, security, identity and access management (IAM), resilience, and observability.
  • Continuously optimizing cloud infrastructure for performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness through automation, monitoring, and capacity planning.
  • Developing and enforcing governance models, ensuring cloud solutions comply with statewide security policies, security standards, and best practices.
  • Analyzing, designing, researching, and assisting with the development of the architecture for cloud-based applications or applications migrating to a cloud vendor. Key aspects of relevance include performance, security, reliability, scalability, and cost-effectiveness of the solution.
  • Defining standards, best practices, and reference architectures for cloud usage across the enterprise, and translate these reference architectures into solution blueprints, which can then be leveraged by application owners.
  • Collaborating with agencies to define and build reference architectures for new technologies not yet adopted within the enterprise.
  • Overseeing the technical aspects of IT projects, including design, implementation, and testing. Serves as the technical leader, providing guidance and direction across different infrastructure architectural domains like networking, security, IAM, resiliency, and observability

As part of the Identity & Converged Platform within the Department of Information Technology, the Cloud team brings and supports new IT cloud services for its customers. The Identity & Converged Platform – Cloud offers a rich, complex, and continuously evolving environment where multiple teams work together to meet agency’s needs and challenges within the everchanging IT landscape.

Knowledge Skills And Abilities/Management Preferences

The following Management Preferences are not required, but applicants that possess these skills are preferred:

  • Knowledge of automation and orchestration of Infrastructure, using IAC, agile and SecDevOps methodologies.
  • Experience with Cloud Management and Monitoring, including health, performance, and financial monitoring of cloud infrastructure.
  • Project and program management planning and organizational skills

Minimum Education And Experience

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or closely related degree from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressive IT experience including four years of experience related to cloud architecture design and/or implementation;

or

Associate degree in computer science, information technology, or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and seven years of progressive IT experience including five years of experience related to cloud architecture design and/or implementation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
