Job Description

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under supervision, this position performs tasks involving manual labor requiring the highest degree of skill. Such tasks include repair, repainting, rebuilding, and assembly of playground equipment, bleachers, and fences.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receive general supervision from the supervisor and DPW Commissioner. Provides technical guidance to crew workers. Assigned to positions of grade 10 and lower.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Uses both manual tools and motor equipment to prepare and line baseball, football, soccer, and lacrosse fields for use.
• Prepares, fertilizes, seeds, rolls, and re-sods areas to renew grass and also plants flowers and shrubs while performing routine landscaping work.
• Cleans playgrounds, tennis courts, tot lots, and other recreation areas as needed.
• During inclement weather, this position may be assigned to snow removal operation tasks such as shoveling and plowing of snow, sanding of icy areas, removal of ice, and opening of drains as needed.
• Supervise a small work crew doing unskilled and semi-skilled work performed by maintenance persons and laborers on assigned projects. 
• Heavy work is required. 
• Must be able to use measuring devices and have functional math skills.
• Performs other related duties as required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Minimum: High School or GED

Must Hold: Valid Class D Driver’s License

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Indoor and outdoor environments with a wide range of weather conditions, exposure to vibrations and noise; and work on slippery or uneven surfaces. Work with electrical energy; work with and around heavy machinery; work in or near vehicle traffic; exposure to dust and fumes from motorized equipment; possible exposure to toxic chemicals; irregular working hours for inclement weather situations and other circumstances.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: 

Essential functions may require maintaining the physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods; moderate to heavy lifting and carrying which includes the ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds; pulling, reaching, bending, climbing, and kneeling; use of fingers, both hands and legs required; must be able to distinguish colors and operate assigned vehicles.
