Job Description

Introduction

The Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Health Care System is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Research Assistant (GS-7) to join the Center for Care Delivery and Outcomes Research (CCDOR). This full-time position supports multiple health services research studies aimed at improving care for Veterans through clinical trials, implementation science, and learning health systems approaches.

We are looking for a flexible, reliable team member who can manage multiple priorities, follow through on tasks, and communicate effectively with participants and study teams. This role involves making and receiving calls, tracking patient treatment progress, and ensuring timely follow-up. Applicants must be willing to work on-site at the Minneapolis VA.

CCDOR is a VA Health Systems Research Center of Innovation with over 30 investigators and 100+ research staff. This position will support several investigators under the direction of senior project staff (research coordinator and/or project manager).

GS-7 Research Assistant Duties and Responsibilities

A research Assistant in CCDOR would work closely with investigators and study teams to implement study protocols. This includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:

  • Review and extract data from medical records.
  • Prepare survey mailings and log returned assessments into study database.
  • Monitor recruitment progress using the study’s web-based tracking application.
  • Schedule and administer phone surveys as requested by participants.
  • Respond to identified suicide risk by informing the study Principal Investigator and project manager.
  • Conduct library work, manage literature searches, and prepare bibliographies.
  • Assist in data collection/cleaning.
  • Maintain data and study files in accordance with project protocols.
  • Schedule study related meetings and keep minutes documenting decisions.
  • Alert the Principal Investigator and project manager of data collection/protocol breeches, inconsistencies, or other problems that may arise within the studies, as well as suggesting methods of correction.
  • Assist in the preparation of manuscripts and presentation of the data. Activities may include helping to create posters for professional presentations; creating tables and charts; editing scholarly manuscripts; and assisting with formatting and uploading files, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors (BA/BS) degree in public health, biology, sociology, psychology or related allied health field from an accredited college or university, ideally with at least 1 year of specialized research experience. A candidate without such experience will be considered with an undergraduate GPA ≥ 3.0.
  • Prior research experience should include data collection and data storage, institutional review board processes, and knowledge of descriptive statistical procedures. Experience working on previous observational or health services studies is preferred.
  • Experience in coordinating multiple tasks and project elements with differing timelines and completion deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel as well as virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in patient-facing roles or customer service.
  • Strong time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative and reliability in completing tasks with minimal supervision.

Compensation

  • This is a GS-7 level position with a full-time starting salary of $55,012.
  • This will be a 13-month appointment and is renewable pending performance review and funding. It is eligible for full benefits.
